What causes the Nintendo Wii U Drive Mechanism fault?

The main reason we see Wii U consoles with drive faults coming in are caused by accidental damage. We have found foreign objects inside the console and sometimes too many discs being inserted.

Dust can also cause problems with the Wii U drive sticking, which stops it from operating. The internal mechanics can often get clogged up with dust and hair (particularly from pets) and a full service is needed. Any parts that have worn, like the motor belt or worm gear, may also become stiff. This can cause problems with the laser movement.

One last reason is general wear and tear. Many of the Wii U drive's internal components are made of plastic so can become worn. Motors that move the disc can wear out too and the bearings can cause the motors to become stiff.
